At risk for Lymphedema?

Are you at risk of developing Lymphedema?  It is important to understand what causes this condition to take place in your body.

What is Lymphedema?

According to National Cancer Institute, “Lymphedema is the build-up of fluid in soft body tissues when the lymph system is damaged or blocked”.

Two Types of Lymphedema: 

Primary Lymphedema is caused  by abnormal development of lymph system which can occur at birth or later in life.

Secondary Lymphedema is caused by damage to the Lymph system, often a result of infection, cancer, injury, removal of lymph nodes, or radiation.

Symptoms Include:

  • Swelling in the arm or leg
  • Heavy feeling in your arm or leg
  • Trouble moving a joint in the arm or leg
  • Itching of the legs or toes
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Loss of hair
  • Thickening of skin
